Edison Electric Light Company was first established on the 15th of October in the year 1878 by Thomas Alva Edison. Soon after this, rival business's had already started emerging. The Thomson-Houston electric company, came together to join forces against Edison's firm. This led Edison to bring together his various business's under the banner of the Edison General Electric Company by 1890. However, the two electric giants leader realised that it was in their best interests to come togther as a greater conglomorate. Thus, together they formed the General Electric company in 1892 and acquired all the assers of Edisons's firm. General Electric set up its own research lab which made way for the various electrical appliances, some of which, are still in use today.
