It's when your muscles clench together due to stress. I get them all the time in my back. They hurt. :(

It is a place in your muscles that gets triggered on and off but gets stuck in the on mode and starts to spasm and forms a knot. Massage, ultrasound and electrical stimulation are ways of helping relieve these knots but do not get rid of them all together. You can also try using hot and cold packs for relief.
