What Were The Makahs Occupations?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

They were whalers, mainly but there were also
those who hunted in the forests, fished in fresh
and saltwater, found tidbits left in tide pools when
the tide went out.  They made ceder boats
for whale-hunting.   They gathered nuts, grains
and fungi.  I can imagine that there were those
who made harpoons, hooks, needles to trade
to others for their needs.   Those who rendered
the whale blubber for oil and those who butchered
the whales.  There were healers and those who were
artists in some medium.  Those who tanned hides
and furs.   Some were advisers and teachers.
Those who trapped otters and fish.  Being able to
supply their own needs, or trade others for them,
was important for the Makah survival, just as it was
for other such tribes.  Their hardships came to be
mainlyy because of 'progress' and 'profit'
