Well, I've never been around a dog going into labor, but we have cows. I would guess it will be very similar. Your dog should start to get her milk. It should be very noticeable. Also her hind end will get loose and bouncy looking. When she walks it'll kind of jiggle like jello. Then I'm sure there will be discharge, clear and slimy. Once all of that occurs it could be anytime from an hour to days. When a cow goes into labor they swish their tail, lay down, stand up, turn circles, lay down again, stand up, sniff and lick at the ground etc. Once they start that, it can still take up to a few hours.

There are a lot of good resource sites on the Internet that will walk you through the stages of labor and help prepare you for what's to come and introduce you to the possible complications that may arise.

Here's one of my favorites... http://www.debbiejensen.com/whelping.html
I strongly urge you to due some reading before the day comes, your dog's life and the lives of her pups may depend on you, and you'll want to be prepared.

I was a breeder of Shih-tzus for 20 years. When a dog is getting ready to give birth they lose their appetite a day or two before. They will need a place to have their pups. You will notice if there is a blanket or newspaper in the welping box that they will nest. (This means they will try to get things ready for the puppies. Another sign of them going into labor is that their temperature drops and they start to shiver. Have your vets phone number handy in case of any emergencies.
