Poverty Bay is located on the north eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island and is one among several inlets found in the region; the bay is well known on several counts being the first part of New Zealand to be accessed by Europeans when the famous British explorer James Cook set foot on the island on October 7, 1769.

The city of Gisborne is situated on the northern coast of the bay and is believed to be one of the first cities on Earth where the day starts on account of its proximity to the International Date Line.

The region is also popular for its white vines made from a variety of the famed Chardonnay grapes and several kinds of fruits and vegetables which grow abundantly in the fertile soil of the region. The area was named as Poverty Bay on account of a fracas that took place between Captain Cook's crew and the native Maoris due to a miscommunication preventing Cook from acquiring the necessary provisions which led him to name the bay so.
