The village of Ternhill is located in the county of Shropshire in the north-west of England. It is located where the A53 and the A41 intersect. It is generally to the east of Lostford, To the north-east is Market Drayton. It is nearest to the Liverpool John Lennon Airport which is more than fifty kilometers away. The railway station of Press Railway Station is ten kilometers.

The village is famous because of the Royal Air Force base located there. It is known as the RAF Tern Hill. The base was opened and closed between 1916 and 1922. It was however reopened in 1935 when the air force decided to expand. The airfield is primarily used for RAF helicopters. Its association with helicopters started way back in 1961.

On the 20th of February 1989 IRA bombers caused havoc at the base by bombing the barracks there. Luckily for the service men based there the bombers were spotted by a vigilant sentry, a Lance Corporal Alan Norris who raised the alarm in time.
