This newsroom-set comedy was awarded an Emmy in 1992 for a Christmas episode. This was followed by two BAFTAs for best comedy, as well as another Emmy. The series grew more and more popular, not only for its topical social comedy, but even more for the complex, tangled lives of its characters. These included creepy chief executive Gus (Robert Duncan) Sir Royston’s unquestioning lackey; meek editor George (Jeff Rawle) worn out by his rapacious ex and delinquent daughter; compulsive gambler and womaniser Dave (Neil Pearson); Sally (Victoria Weeks) the snooty yet nymphomaniac newsreader and her sardonic, drunken colleague Henry (David Swift); intrepid reporter Damien (Stephen Tomkinson) who routinely rigs up stories if real life is too boring; and Gus’s sensible assistant Helen, feebly pursued by George who has no idea that she is a lesbian. Grudgingly assisting them all is a scowling PA, the inappropriately named Joy Merryweather (Susannah Doyle.)
