How Do I Change A Blown Seal In The Rack And Pinion Unit?

I have a bad leak in the power steering and the seals have to be replaced. Is this something i have to take to a mechanic or can i do it myself? Also, how do you know if they have to be changed or is there an alternative that i can add to bring the seals "back to life"? Any help would be great. Thanks

According to a lot of the sites i have read on this the rack and pinion is basically leaking fluid from the power steering unit as a whole sort of like a loop(hose) and the rack and pinion is part of the power steering loop(hose). So it is better just to replace the whole unit. Here is a page that describes it in more detail.     Www.aa1car.com/library/2003/bf20340.htm
