The Pittsburgh Pirates faced the New York Yankees. The Pirates won four games to three.
In Game 7 the Pirates came back from a 7-4 deficit to take a 9-7 lead to the 9th inning. The Yanks tied the game to send the game to the bottom of the 9th tied at 9. In the bottom of the 9th second baseman Bill Mazeroski became the first player to end a World Series with a walk-off homer over the left field wall to give the Pirates their 3rd World Championship.
