1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Throughout the history of computing, computers have come to be a valuable resource to many people. They have continued to develop into a user friendly and feature rich tool to help in the productivity and enjoyment of many organizations and homes. One major step in this process has been the development of random access memory. Prior to the creation of random access memory, several methods were used to attempt temporary storage of information for programs and the operating system. There were various shortcomings for these other systems. In 1968, Robert Dennard invented RAM to resolve the problem of temporary storage for computers. This allowed for information to be placed and retrieved without having to access any other data. Information stored in RAM is quicker to access than on disk. RAM only stores data while the computer remains on. Once the computer is shut off, any information stored in RAM is wiped away. RAM has continued to evolve with the increases in performance and capacity of modern day computers. The creation of RAM has definitely been a big factor in the ongoing evolution of computers.
