On the 17th of October 1979 when President Jimmy Carter was President ,the Department of Education Organisation Act was passed into law. This act created two new positions on the Cabinet, one of which was that of the Secretary of Education. President Jimmy Carter chose Shirley Mount Hufstedler to this position. She was the Secretary of Education from 1979 to 1981 and was succeeded by Terrell Bell in office.
Born in Denver Colorado on the 24th of August 1925 Shirley Mount Hufstedler has had more to do with the legal profession then with Education. Jimmy Carter never appointed a Supreme Court Judge as President, but claimed if were to have done so it would have had to nominate Shirley Hufstedler. She studied from the University of New Mexico from where she received her B.B.A. in 1945 and later got her LL.B. in 1949 from the Stanford Law School.
