Alot of rodents to eat, or usually the snakes sun themselves to warm up, and then they hunt for food.

During the day when the sun is out the snake would use it to warm up, but at night the snake would use it to cool down... Possibly if the snake smells food it is interested in hunting for small mammals and rodents that would fit in it's belly.
