Group discussions can be on a personal level (with your friends) or a part of the interviewing process. To be successful at group discussions you need to understand what the basic idea and purpose of such discussions is.
While the former is something that all of us take part in without feeling any pressure the latter is where one needs to be careful as this is one of the elimination round. Irrespective of the kind of discussion, there are few ground rules and pointers that can make the difference between success and failure. Here are some of the basic ones:
Understand what is being discussed. Get your initial facts and thought process in place. Listen to what others are saying carefully, this way you can assess the knowledge of your peers and also you can avoid repeating information.
Speak slowly and clearly using the right pitch, pausing for effect and gathering your thoughts is an excellent ploy. Do not interrupt, instead wait your turn. Be politically correct and stay away from remarks that are controversial.
Using these guidelines will give you a better placing in any discussion.

In a group discussion, we need to have good communication skills so we can easily grasp and express our own ideas and address the others in the group.
