The chemical name of lye is sodium hydroxide. It is also called caustic soda. It is a strong base. This chemical is also used in the processing of soft drinks. If your son has taken a soft drink or coca cola then OK. If he has taken lye in house cleaners then it is poisoning. The lye poisoning can cause respiratory, gastric and skin problems. Take him to hospital and give him lot of water or milk if not vomiting.
