The term hard drive is used in computer science to refer to the hard disk drive. The hard disk drive or hard drive is that part of the Central Peripheral Unit of the computer that is responsible for storage of data. It is a big magnetic disk that is the physical area on the computer that stores data. The disk runs at high speeds and has the capacity to store really large amounts of data.

The first hard disks were manufactured by IBM in 1973, and were called Winchester drives. That is why a hard disk is even today also referred to as a Winchester drive. The hard disk drive can save data on it even after the computer has been switched off unlike Random Access Memory, where data is lost as soon as the computer is switched off. Usually, when you perform a 'save' operation on your computer, the data is saved on to the hard disk. This is why the hard disk can be very useful in tracing out data that has been apparently deleted from the computer.
