When Was Canada First Colonized?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Canada was home to native Indian tribes before being colonized by the French and British colonists. The first arrivals from Europe however were from as far back as 1000 AD, when the tribes of Odin and Thor, better known as the Vikings first arrived.

John Cabot and Martin Frobisher were the First English explorers to arrive in Canada in 1497 and 1576 respectively. The French arrived a bit later, Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain in 1534 and 1603 respectively.

The first colonies were French, Port Royal and Quebec City in 1605 and 1608 respectively. The British set up shop soon after in the form of Newfoundland in 1610.  What followed were wars, alliances, counter alliances, treaties and settlements between the French and the British and their combinations with various local tribes.
