The modem is a hardware device. There is no software modem. But the modem has a software which is needed to make it operational on a computer. This software comes on a CD with Modem.

Most motherboards nowadays have a built in modem which is good to use. However, you should buy US Robotics 56K.

A software modem is a low-cost alternative to a standard hardware-based modem. While hardware modems contain all the parts necessary to connect to a telephone or other transmission line, the software modem transfers that work to the computer's processor.
