The only legal way is for him to agree to leave or if he breaks any of the rules of the lease. Of course even if he is arrested for any reason he will still be on the lease, there is no way that would remove him

I have to wonder if you and your ex are still living together? This whole thing kind of puzzles me. I can see you wanting him off the lease to sort of move on past the relationship...
However, if he is not living there, anymore, can't you just have the landlord change the locks? However, if he is still on the lease, that means that he is still liable for any damage done to the unit. And as long as your ex has a job, he still has income, which would be of some benefit to the landlord.
