What Is A Portuguese Podengo?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Though it may sound it, the Portuguese Podengo isn't a form of ballroom dance but a breed of dog. The Podengo, or Portuguese Rabbit Dog, is one of nine native dog breeds in Portugal.

Of these nine indigenous breeds, the Podengo was by far the most common and widespread, and used almost exclusively for rabbit hunting.

Like many other breeds, the Podengo comes in three sizes, the Grande or large, Medio or medium-sized, and he Pequeno or small variety. Of the three sizes, the most popular throughout rural and urban Portugal are the Grande and Pequeno Podengos.

Neat and terrier like, the Podengo is quite distinct from the soundalike Spanish Podenco. In the past, however, when the Podengo was used in Portugal for bear and stag hunting, there was a marked similarity to its Spanish neighbour.

The Grande Podengo measures between 22 and 27 inches tall, the Medio 16 to 20 inches, and the Pequeno, 12 to 16 inches.
