Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are two ways by which diseases may spread through water:

    1) When you ingest/drink water contaminated with pathogens; and
    2) When your skin comes into contact with contaminated water, as in when you are bathing or swimming.

It is more common, however, to become sick by drinking water or using this water in preparation of food.
The pathogens that cause water borne diseases are bacteria, viruses and protozoa. They usually come into the water when water is contaminated with human or animal waste.
Other than these microorganisms, water may also cause transfer of various pathogens into the body which cause diseases like schistosomiasis, ascariasis, and enterobiasis. Some of these can enter the body through skin.

    Some bacterial waterborne diseases are:
    Cholera
    Typhoid
    Botulism
    Dysentary

    Some viral waterborne diseases are:
    Hepatitis A
    Polio
    Adenovirus infection

Some of the protozoal diseases include:
    Amoebiasis
    Giardiasis
    Microsporidiosis

Most of the waterborne disease are related to the intestines and the digestive tract. Common symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and fever.
