If You Were Designing An Acting Course For Adults, What Books Would You Have In Your Book List?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

If I were designing a course in acting, I would prefer if there weren't any books involved, but plays. However, if I had to add books, the first and most important would be the following:

Practical Handbook for the Actor - Melissa Bruder
A simple practical guide to acting, without the b*llsh*t.

True and False - David Mamet
The theories behind the practise of Practical Aesthetics

The Monologue Audition - Karen Kohlhass
The theories of practical aesthetics in action for monologues

Action - The Actors Thesaurus - Maria Calderone
A thesaurus of playable actions, things actors can actually DO on stage, rather than think or emote.

These for me are the only essential books on acting, the others confuse the issue, although they might be well written or seminal works.  Books I would also include are:

    The Poetics by Aristotle
Voice and the Actor - Cicely Berry
Laban for All - Jean Newlove

Of course there are thousands of other books, I would include John Barton's book Playing Shakespeare and Patsy Rodenberg's book Speaking Shakespeare as two of the most important books on stylistic playing.
