Is It True That Coca-Cola Used To Contain Cocaine?

Answer Question

Yes. Cocaine was first synthesised in the latter half of the nineteenth century and was a popular a fairly respectable product for several decades around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Many products marketed as tonics and cure-alls contained significant quantities of cocaine, including Coke. Coke, in fact, was originally sold as a medicinal drink, and was advertised as a healthy alternative to alcohol.
In the 1890s in America some claimed that the use of cocaine was connected to sprees of crime and violence that were taking place then, and in some quarters Coca-Cola was denounced for its irresponsibility in making the drug so freely available.

In response, Coca-Cola changed the recipe for its most important product and stopped marketing it as having medicinal value, promoting it instead as simply a pleasant drink. The new Coke still contained the extract of coca leaves but with all traces of cocaine removed.
