Why Did Romeo Kill Tybalt?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Romeo and two friends "gatecrash" a feast, given by Capulet, to let Paris woo his daughter Juliet. Romeo sees Juliet dancing, and removes his disguise, a mask, to get a better view, and is instantly recognised by Tybalt, kinsman of Capulet, who, infuriated at Romeo's arrogance, seeks him out to fight with him. He misses Romeo in the general melee and swirl of the feast, but later meets Benvolio and Mercutio, Romeo's two best friends, and remonstrates with them so furiously that Mercutio has to fight with him, and is killed by Tybalt! Then Romeo appears, sees the slain Mercutio, and fights bitterly with Tybalt killing him!  Just then, Escalus, Prince of Verona, turns up, and banishes Romeo to Mantua.
