Born in Glasgow Scotland, Ray Houghton began his professional career at London club West Ham United in nineteen seventy nine.

Houghton spent three years at Upton Park and after failing to make any impact at the Hammers he moved on a free transfer to Fulham after managing only one game in the claret and blue of West Ham.

After three years at Fulham Houghton moved onto Oxford and eventually Liverpool where he spent the five most successful years of his club career, where he won two league championships and two FA cups.

Houghton made his début for Ireland in nineteen eighty six and played seventy three times for his country.

He was also an integral part of the Ireland squad in three major international championships; first in Euro eighty eight, where he scored the goal that beat England in  the group game between the two; again in Italia ninety and he was again present and again a goal scorer in the USA world cup of ninety four, where he scored the goal that beat Italy.
