The world's largest fish award goes to the solitary whale shark and originally measured in at a heafty seven meters. However, it seems that the whale shark is getting smaller.
The size of this fish has declined in recent years and studies shown at the International Whale Shark Conference in Perth in May 2005 showed that the whale shark had declined to just over fice meters in size.
Researchers are at a loss at to why the fish is shrinking, but they think that injuries and high fishing areas have meant that many of the whale sharks lives have been cut short - hence they have not reached full growth.
The whale shark lives in tropical watersaround the world and has been spotted in the protected waters in Western Australia. Due to their size, many smaller fish use the whale shark as a floating motor-home and often stick close to them so that they don't get attacked by preditors.
