A skillet, frying pan or fry pan, is used for the basic function of frying, searing and browning foods. It is usually anywhere between eight to twelve inches in length, it has flared edges and is without a lid.
Where as pan having identical size but with straight edges and a lid is known as a sauté pan. Application of the term skillet is rare outside of North America. Conventionally, frying pans were created from cast iron. Even though cast iron is still used on a large scale, mainly for open-air cooking, nearly all the frying pans now days are created from other metals like aluminium and stainless steel.
The matter and manufacturing technique applied in contemporary frying pans differ greatly whether in shape or style.
