Casemates is the main square in Gibraltar and is a hotspot for tourists and residents alike. The square is lined with an assortment of eateries, pubs, shops and kiosks. It is bustling in summer, with all cafes serving outdoors under much needed umbrellas. These are usually full of adults drinking coffee, with the children gathering in the pedestrianised centre with bikes and balls.
There is a two story shopping arcade with a balcony overlooking the arcade. Here there is a glass blowing museum, an art gallery and a craft shop selling local goods such as handmade cards, bags and stained glass. Casemates is also the end point for reconstructions of past military history, complete with a parade, band and traditional costume.
In the summer a stage is put up for several musical and children’s events. There are usually children’s entertainers and street sellers at this time of year also. At New Year people gather for such an event and for the fireworks display that is tradition when the clock strikes twelve.
