What you might expect from such a funny-shaped dog, they often have back problems.  The spongey discs between back vertebrae are particularly vulnerable.  Disk problems, such as rupture are fairly common.  In worse cases paralysis may result (these problems may or may not be alleviated by surgery).

The best cure is prevention.  Advice is to discourage daschunds from jumping or taking stairs and to carry them with full support to both front and back legs.  Falls especially need to be avoided, any sort of fall can greatly increase the chances of back injury.  Obesity also greatly increases the chances of back problems occuring.

On top of that, there are genetic problems.  Inbreeding has promoted heriditary forms of epilepsy and deafness in the breed.  Some individuals tend to be highly strung and snappy as a result of selective trait breeding.

Breeders are trying to breed these weaknesses out, but it may be an uphill job.  Daschunds today are a much shorter-legged breed than they were 50 or 100 years ago.

They are prone to back problems.
          Elbow malformation(dysplasia)

          Dislocation of the kneecap(patellamluxation)

          Epilepsy

Eye problems(cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy)

          Diabetes.

Frequent visits to the vet should Help.
