What Is The Differ Enc Between An Atomic Mass And A Atomic Number?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Atomic number and atomic mass both relates to the atomic structure. Atomic number is also known as proton number. Atomic number is the number of protons present in a nucleus of an atom. The number of electrons and number of protons are equal in an atom. But when an atom loses or gains an electron, ions are formed but number of protons remain same. Atomic mass is equal to the sum of number of protons and number of neutrons present in a nucleus. For example atomic number of a carbon atom is 6 whereas, the atomic mass of carbon atom is 12. The atomic mass of an atom is calculated relative to the mass of carbon. Moreover, atomic number determines the chemical properties of an atom.
