How Long Does A Hamster Live For?

I once had a golden hamster that lived 4 years almost 5 years. Most of our hamsters did not live past 3 years. I think it was because there were other breeds (teddy bear, and dwarf) It is my belief that dwarf hamsters have a shorter life span while teddy bear and golden hamsters live longer.

It depends on what kind of hamster you have Syrian, or Dwarf.
The research that I have done, the ranges are from 1.5 years to 5 years. One book gave the lowest and another gave the highest, that's just approx. You can go to www.hamsterific.com and do some research there as well. Plus we also help you with any other questions you may have.

Hamsters are small, hairy, tailless little cretures, originally from the Middle East andsoutheastern Europe. The most common hamster is the Syrian hamster which is usually a golden colour, although it can be cream or white in colour.
Most hamsters decend from just three littermates which were domesticated in the 1930's.
The life-span of this little furry friend is around two to three years. By this time, your hamster is the equivilent to 80 human years. As hamsters age they become sleepier and begin to slow down. It's not uncommon for an old hamster to hibernate a lot when he is in his autumnal years and he will begin to change in colour slightly, as if he is going grey.
Hamsters make ideal pets for young children because they love company and can often be persuaded to do cute tricks in return for a small treat. They are also easy to look after and cheap to buy so when one goes up to hammy-heaven, it can soon be replaced - often without the child realising!

It also dependa on what you feed your hamster.If you feed it unhealthy things like chips,cookies and popcron they wont live for and if you change there diet alot like give them seeds for a month and than give them grasshoppers the next month they will die. but if you give the stuff that are right for there diet diet and dont chang up there diet then they might live longer.

I sort of depends...witch hamster you talking about? If its rather big, its a Syrian with lives 3-4 yrs while darf's only about 1-2 yrs! Hope this helps!
