Hartlepool United Football Club was founded in 1908. Two important events happened at the time in order for the club to be formed. First of all, the West Hartlepool rugby club had suffered some financial difficulties and gone bankrupt, thus vacating their home ground.
Also, the amateur side in the town, West Hartlepool had just won the prestigious FA Amateur Cup.
So it was decided that a new professional club should be formed which would occupy the ground at Victoria Park. This club was called Hartlepool's United Football Athletic Company.
Hartlepool United still play their home games at Victoria Park to this day.
The stadium has a capacity for almost 7,700 spectators.
The club reached the playoff finals of the Football League Division Two in the season of 2003/04. However they missed out and ended up being relegated the following season into Division Three (now League Two) after finishing in a disappointing 21st place.
