Does Anyone Know About The Kentucky Derby Festival, Or Does Anyone Watch The Race Itself?

The Kentucky Derby Festival is one of North Americas big celebrations. It goes on for about 2 weeks with partying and events, before the actual race. I just wonder how 'well known it is,' or if anyone but the immediate locals and the celebrity guests, participate in any way.

First Saturday in May. Mint juleps, wagering and horse-talk. Everyone dressed up in hats. Lots of fun.

Never been to Churchill downs, but have attended many Derby Day parties with Kentuckians in San Francisco. So much so that I'm an honorary Kentucky Colonel.

Forgot to mention derby pie. Pecan with chocolate chips added.

This year is the 134th Kentucky Derby.  It is the first of three races for the "triple crown" which is to horse racing what Miss Universe is to the beauty queens of the world!
Typically, the festival begins 2 weeks before the 1st Saturday in May with awesome Air Show and then a spectacular fireworks dispaly over the Ohio River (between Indiana and Kentucky) titled, Thunder over Louisville.
During this two week time period (although it began a week early this year), people from all walks of life participate in an array of activities, some of which....are you ready....involve racing.  There are steamboat races, hot air balloon races, a marathon, bed races, box derby and stick horse racing!  People gather at the "Chow Wagons" to enjoy live entertainment, food vendors, and partying.  There are fund raisers, fashion shows, and concerts!
Here is the thing....a lot of local people in the Ohio Valley HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THE ACTUAL DERBY!
Personally, I have been to the Oaks (the day before Derby, racing fillies only), and it was wild enough for me!
I do think most people enjoy picking a horse, and watching to see if it wins!
