It was apparently invented by a man in Persia a long time ago. The man gave the game to his king, who was pleasantly surprised. The king decided to reward the man with anything he wanted. The man asked if the king would be so kind as to put 1 grain of rice on the first square of the board, 2 on the next, then 4, 8,16,32, etc. The king was not smart enough to see that 10 to the power 63 grains of rice was enough to cover the whole of his kingdom in a sea of grain 3 metres high!
