How Many Clubs Have Had A Player Manager In The Top Division Of English Football?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

To date only thirteen top flight clubs have employed the services of a player manager.

Les Allen became the first in the nineteen sixty eight, sixty nine season when he took bith jobs for London based club Queens Park Rangers.

Johnny Giles also took on both roles in the seventy sox, seventy seven season for West Bromwich Albion, to become the second person to do so.

Everton legend Howard Kendell also took the vacant managers job at the Toffees as player manager, with Kendall playing and managing in the eighty one, eighty two season.

With out doubt, the most sucessful player manager is Kenny Dalglish.  After being given the job after Joe Fagan's retirement, many douted Dalglish's ability to take on such a tough job.  Dalglish proved the doubters wrong in spectacular style, winning the league and cup double in his firat season of club management.

The most reason player to do both is former Chelsea star Gianluca Vialli who did both in nineteen ninety eight.
