This one is somewhat down to personal preference, though there are some pragmatic considerations to take into account.

If your pen is for business or everyday use, then the choice is narrowed down to blue or black. On balance, though, black edges it on the grounds that it looks more professional and is a legal requirement for signing legal documents and form-filling etc.

Often, the requirement for black ink is because the forms are to be digitally scanned, and scanners, like photocopiers, seem to prefer black ink to blue. Presumably, because black ink on white paper offers the best contrast and therefore increases accuracy.

Red ink, meanwhile, is another option, especially if you have to edit paper documents and print outs on a regular basis. Here, red ink is ideal for highlighting amendments or deletions as it leaps out of the paper more so than black or blue which tend to fade into the surrounding text.

Green ink is not an option, unless you like to write crank letters.

can someone cite the actual law stating legal documents need to be signed in black ink (Colorado, please)?

Our legal department demands all signatures be in blue ink to distinguish the copies. There's no legal reason nor is it unprofessional.

I've been looking for an answer for ages.  Best that I can come up with, is that very old copy machines were unable to copy the blue inks. This resulted in businesses adopting black ink. I would very much like to know "if" there is any legal reason that a business cannot use blue? Mostly, I think it's tradition.... Comes down to company policy and peoples general inability to change.

I like black ink when I'm writing something important. When I write in blue ink, I tend to write messier as I usually only use it for notes.
Purple ink? Now were talking.

Black ink is far more often used by professionals.  You will almost never see a prescription filled out in blue ink. Personally I prefer black in ballpoint pens and blue in fountain pens.

Going a little further with the reason .to prevent check washing use a black permanent ink fine point marker so the ink can not be washed from the check or legal documents..at least this is what they show on these shows to help stop fraud/theft...I also found a blog that talked about using black gel ink pens.so I am going to go with black...

If you use black it can look like the whole document has been photocopied. Black is black. Boring. Blue on the other hand gets some pen pushers all hot under the collar because it's not black. I use Blue-black ink. You can use it where it says black only and yet keep your individuality, which is probably the reason you write with a fountain pen in the first place

I should think Blue ink would be preferred when signing any documents, in order to easily distinguish it from any copies made.
