The Philippines, a nation of islands that is situated in Southeast Asia has the full name of the Republic of the Philippines and consists of a total of 7107 islands with a total land area of around 300,000 square kilometres.

The country was originally named "Las Islas Filipinas" after King Philip of Spain.

For 300 years, the islands were ruled by Spain until the revolution of 1896.  After the Spanish-American war of 1898, the USA gained control of the islands and it ruled for about 50 years.
