    A numbering system is a way of representing numbers. The system we most commonly use is called the decimal or base 10, system. It is called base 10 because it uses ten symbols the digits 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 to represent all possible numbers. Numbers greater than nine, such as 21 and 683, are represented by combinations f these symbols. Because we are so familiar with the decimal system, it may never have occurred to most of us that we could represent numbers in any other way.

    However, nothing says that a numbering system has to have ten possible symbols, Many other numbers would do as a base. Binary or base 2 systems are used extensively by computers to represent numbers and other characters. Computer systems can perform computations and transmit data thousands of times faster in binary form than they can using decimal representations. Thus, it's important for anyone studying computers to know how the binary system works. Anyone contemplating a professional career in computers should also understand the hexadecimal (base 16) system. There are many number systems, three of them are decimal, binary, hexadecimal system. Decimal: A numbering system with ten symbols-0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9.Binary: A numbering system with 2 symbols 0 and 1. Hexadecimal : A numbering system with 16 symbols 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F.

        A number system is a way or method of counting articles, things or anything desired. It is in fact, a way of identifying the quantity of something countable. A number system involves the use of a set of symbols to express quantities. These symbols form the basis for counting, determining an order, comparing the amounts in question, performing the desired calculations and representing value. A number is represented by the set of characters and the specific mathematical rules applicable. Some examples include the Arabic, Babylonian, Chinese and Greek and even the Mayan and Roman number systems. The ISBN and Dewey Decimal System are typical examples of the number systems implemented successfully in libraries. Even the Social Security operations employ a number system.

        The number system is also referred to as the system of numeration and it comprises of
      a set of numbers that are represented by numerals, in a consistent manner. It adopts binary or decimal bases whenever needed. The numeral system represents a set of whole numbers or integers or real numbers etc. It offers every number a unique and definite standard representation. The system is designed to reflect numbers in their structure as algebraic or arithmetic components. The numbering system is an inseparable part of our routine calculations and everyday life.
