My climate control knob broke off-my vents are stuck open so i have no warm heat coming in-is there a way to fix this temporary until i can get it fixed at the dealer ship

I'm installing a fuel pump in my 2004 pontiac grand am. I took the old fuel pump off. I'm trying to get the new fuel pump on. I'm having trouble with a gold ring that turns and locks to hold the fuel pump in the tank. I can't seem to push the pump down enough to be able to turn the ring and lock it in place. Are there any tricks to holding it all together so the gold ring can turn enough to lock it all in place?
