    The Republic of Peru is a country located in the western part of South America. The capital of Peru is Lima. Lima is also the largest city in Peru. Spanish is the official national language spoken by Peruvians, but Quechua and Aymara are also widely spoken. The neighbouring countries of Peru are Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the southeast and Chile to the south. The Pacific Ocean is the western neighbour of Peru. Peru is the home country of the Inca Empire. Peru was a Spanish colony until 1821. The country gained its independence from Spain on July 28, 1821. Peru covers a total area of 1, 285, 216 square kilometres. This makes it the 20th largest country in the world in terms of area. The population of Peru is 27, 968, 000. This makes it the 41st most populated country in the world.
