If the pond is 10 foot wide by 20 foot long by 5 foot deep you have to multiply all these together, 10 x 20 x 5 =1000 then you have to multiply by 7.5, don't ask why you just do), and this gives you the answer 7500. 7500 gallons of water needed to fill your pond.

A gallon is a measure of volume, so you are determining the volume of the pond and expressing that in terms of gallons. The pond dimensions are given in feet, and by the way they are given, they imply that the shape of the pond is rectangular, straight-sided, and of uniform depth. To find the volume of such a shape, you multiply the dimensions. Because the dimensions are all in feet, the result will be in cubic feet, so you need to determine what conversion factor is needed for changing cubic feet to gallons. A liquid gallon (different from a dry gallon) is legally defined as 231 cubic inches, so there are (12 inches/foot)^3/(231 cubic inches/gallon) = 1728/231 gallons/cubic foot. This is about 7.48052, or approximately 7.5. So, you multiply 1000 cubic foot*(7.5 gallons/cubic foot) to get 7500 gallons. 7.5 gallons/cu. ft. is a pretty good approximation to the true conversion factor and is somewhat easy to remember, so it is often used for problems of this nature.
