The part of land that joins North America and South America is called Central America. It is a long, narrow stretch of land that consists of six countries. All of these countries belong to one single group known as Latin America. The common trait shared by all these nations is the trait of language- because all their people speak Spanish, which is one of the Latin languages, that is why the group constituting these countries is referred to as Latin America. The six countries that belong to the group of Latin America are inclusive of Costa Rica, Al Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. In addition to these six countries belonging to Latin America, there is British Honduras, the Panama Canal Zone, which is a narrow strip of Panama that comes under the jurisdiction of the United States. Although many Indians speak their native languages in Latin America, Spanish is the official language in all countries of Central America.
