Where Do I Find A Person To Price An Antique Doily Made Of Gold Thread?

My brother bought a doily about forty years ago for $1. The person was selling a sick neighbor's property to pay medical bills. She said it was originally made by French nuns over a hundred years before, which makes it at least 140 years old. It has an embroidered center about two inches across. The rest of it is made of very heavy gold thread in a delicate pattern.

Forty years ago is also about the time the USA was flooded with fine modern Chinese copies of antique needlework.  The heavy weight supports earlier creation.

A scan with a ruler for scale would be helpful.  Then you can e-mail the scan or carry the picture about to attempt to find knowledgible valuation.  This is just to you won't need to carry the lace itself around to folk who just want to see it.

For "made of" rather than "decorated with" gold thread, I'd suspect it to be bobbin lace.

Is the center also golden thread or is it multicolored silk?

    Web-search [lace valuation]

Refer to the volume *Guide to Lace and Linens* by Elizabeth M. Kurella available through bookstores and some libraries.
