Jesus was crucified on a Friday afternoon and died before sunset.  There was enough time for Joseph of Arimathea to prepare his body for burial, but not enough time for his women friends to bring all the spices they would liked to have used to anoint him before sunset.  Sunset marked the beginning of the Sabbath which was the day of rest.  Jesus rose very early on the following Sunday morning, around dawn.  The bible often mentions three days as the period of his internment, because, according to the way the Jews of that day calculated time, any part of a day was counted as one day.  Also, days were counted from evening to morning.  So the short time left on the Friday afternoon counted as one day.  Friday evening and Saturday to sunset counted as day two, and Saturday evening to dawn Sunday morning counted as day three.  We do not calculate time the same way, so we would probably say about one and a half days.  It was probably approx 36 hours.
