Alum Rock is near San Jose, California. It is census-designated place which means that it has been selected US Census Bureau for statistical reporting. In 2000, it had a populace of 13,479 inhabitants. Apparently it got its name from a rock which was supposedly made of alum. It was situated near the Alum Rock Park. Alum Rock Park came into existence in 1872 and it is the first municipal park in California.
Initially Alum Rock was a separate town but presently it is an unincorporated community under Santa Clara County. Alum Rock was mainly filled with fruit orchards in the past but during 1940's and 50's residential housing came up in Alum Rock leading to formation of its community. Slowly it was mainly occupied by Latino immigrants as the "white flight" phenomena affected this area. Today it is a unique community which is distinctly different from the other parts of San Jose.
