Tigers have been hunted almost to extinction and they have been regarded as a threatened species for about 50 years. In 1972, a survey showed that less than 2000 tigers remained in the wild in India – a shocking figure considering that there were about 40 000 Indian tigers at the turn of the twentieth century.

The survey highlighted the problem and people in India became worried enough to set up a special project, Project Tiger to try to save the tiger from complete wipe out. A leading force behind the project was the President of India, Mrs Ghandi. Reserves were created, including the Sunderbands Tiger Reserve on the Ganges delta, close to the border with Bangladesh. Education programs were also set up to educate people about tigers. The project achieved a great deal of success and the number of tigers in India doubled over the next twenty years. The reserves created also helped to protect other specie such as Rhesus monkeys.
