Why Is My Dog Drinking An Excessive Amount Of Water?
He had knee surgery 3 weeks ago and finished taking antibiotics 6 days ago. The water drinking started 5 days ago and he is urinating excessively too. What does this mean?

When you drink a lot, you pee a lot. Same for dogs.
I think excessive thirst is a sign of liver malfunction - something to do with blood filtering... (I think)
You should call your vet. A medication given to your dog could be causing a bad reaction.
Maybe a side effect of her medicine just make her feel thirsty.

What antibiotic was your dog on? My dog was put on Cephalexin (Keflex) for a skin hot spot, and started drinking out of control, we took her off the antibiotic but her drinking has not gone back to normal and its a month later. After intense internet searches we have found that this drug is not approved by the FDA and many others have the same symptoms. Be careful as our sweet family member is drinking a gallon a day and no one can find out why. all because of the antibiotic.

This could mean that the infection is not cleared up yet and your dog is trying to fight it off. He could be running a slight fever and that is elevating his thirst. I would take him back in for a double check to the vet., you don't want the infection to take such a hold that the dog stops eating and drinking altogether, in that phase, it is touch and go for the dogs very life!
