The word defibrillator is used to refer to an electronic device which is used to establish the normal heartbeat of a person. It is basically a machine which is used to administer an electric shock to the heart of a person in order to re-establish the normal rhythm of his or her heart.

A defibrillator is device that monitors the heart beat rate of a person. It gives out an electrical impulse of a very high amount of energy to stop at a very fast rate and the abnormal rate of heart beats. It returns the heart into a normal rhythm. It can either be placed externally, that is on the chest of the person, or internally, that is surgically placed inside the chest of the person.

It is also called an automated implantable defibrillator. It gives out an electrical pulse to the heart to resume the normal rate of heart beat.
