    Bolus has many definitions. A round mass may also be called a bolus. A single, strong, relatively large dose of drugs administered for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes and taken orally is also bolus. Bolus can also be a soft mass of chewed food within the mouth of an alimentary canal.

    In biological terms bolus, comes from the Latin word "ball" i.e. it is a ball-shaped living thing. In medical language, bolus is a large quantity of a drug given to patients to lift the blood level prior to treatment. Bolus is a commonly used word related to diabetes also referring to the use of bolus as a dosage of fast acting insulin with the intention to cover a metal. Bolus is also a pastry in Netherlands.
