Where Did The Carpathian Mountains Get Their Name From?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There is no specific mention as to from where the Carpathian Mountains got their name but it is believed that the name is taken from the Carp, a Dacian tribe mentioned in the late Roman documents. It is said that they lived on the Eastern Carpathian slopes. The Carpathian is called differently in different European languages. For example, it's Karpati in Siberian, Karpaten in German and Dutch. The name Carpates first came up in Ptolemy's Geography. The Carpathians are named Thorchal or Tarczal in the 13th and 14th centuries in the official Hungarian documents. The Carpathian form a semi-circle surrounding Transcarpathia and Transylvania. The width of the Carpathian corresponds with its altitude. The Carpathian do not form a range or chain of mountains but consists of various distinctive groups.
