Wrexham Association Football Club was founded in 1872 as part of the local cricket club.
As was popular with many cricket teams towards the end of the 19th century, the Wrexham Cricket Club decided to play football during the winter months to keep up their physical fitness levels so that they would be ready to return to cricket the following year.

Even though the club is in Wales, it was elected to the English Football League in 1921 as part of the Third Division.
Unfortunately Wrexham were relegated from League One at the end of the 2004/05 season. They now play in League Two and finished in 13th place in the 2005/06 season.

At the time, football rules were not particularly strict and teams might have as many as 17 players in a side. Wrexham was instrumental in campaigning to reduce this to 11 men per team.

Wrexham have played their home games at the Racehouse Ground since they were formed, apart from the odd spell at the Recreation Ground.
